Hong Kong Family Trip Oct 28 - Nov 16, 2005

Pondered by = Christine =

Had saved this in my tah-ling (laptop) but didn't get the chance to blog it.

Though born and partly bred in HK, it is weird to dhear Cantonese all around me. I was so used to the English/Mandarin environment in Singapore that I forgot how loud and inconsiderate the local here can be.

Oh lord, pls don’t tell me I hv culture shock again …

We were only casually discussing how certain things here can be cheap and even cheaper in China. And on that impulse, we went to travel agency in Mongkok and booked a Guangzhou trip for two days later.

Boy, I love Hong Kong!

Had my favorite beef ball noodle in TST.

The place ain’t posh at all but the noodle is yummy-licious. With the combination of their own home made chili and the bouncy-teeth (direct translation, haha!) beef balls, plus the chewy thin noodles – you would just hope that the chef is yours forever!

It has been there since the 1970’s. Who would have thought the 3 generations of our family would be the fans of such a small hawker stall under the bridge of a CBD?

11/3/05 - Guangzhou Day 1

The minute you landed your feet in Guangzhou, you know the difference. Roads here are much bigger and air are much dustier. Hving a very sensitive nose, I had sniffles and teary eyes whenever I step out of the bus.

We went to this ancient home that is still being preserved by the government. Wall designs are still gold plated (or so they say). Since fridge hasn't been invented then, they put most of their food inside this big hole under the living room, as the temperature is much colder down there. So when they need to eat, they just had to pull this string and voila, dinner is served!

I find the place eerie. Perhaps, it's the drop of temperature when you are inside the house, especially inside the bedrooms. Didn't stay long there and went to the gardens. It's huge! As you walk along, you would notice the missing construction in certain places. Not because they were built that way but because they sold it when they are in need of money. Interesting, eh?

Next, we went to the new development in Guangzhou - Ostrich.
People ride on them, people eat all parts of them, except their blood. And yes, even their genitals in wine! They offer testing but not surprisingly, no one went near it.

I think, this is the only desserted place where free food are given.

11/4/05 - Guangzhou Day 2

I would never expect China to hv such a huge and beautiful hotel. The desgin is modern and contemporary, neat and very well decorated. As per the tour guide, this is the hotel that has 43" plasma TV in all rooms. Big investment, I hv to say.

We went to this Tin Hau temple, which again the place is not only huge but also very high. Climbed close to 300+ steps up and if I hv the strength to, there are much more up there. After 600+ steps of walking and crawling, we just sat in silence, admiring the nature.

Oh, btw, we hv been eating with 4 hungry ghosts and a burping couple during this tour. I am still amazed at how fast that granny can eat. She was already in her second bowl while we all are still in 1/4 of our first bowl. She ate much more than any man on the table and with her speed of chewing, I can only gulped. And to finish it off, these other couple will always burp, as if it's to mark the end of the dinner.

We went to a lot of places than what was mentioned in these 2 short days. A good family trip, I hv to say.

It is funny how simple things in life can make you so happy.

I washed the cover of my beanbag.

Now, the challenge is put all the beans in without spilling them all over. And boy, is that hard, even when 4 pairs of hands are involved! The opening is so small and we are busy shouting to each other to hold the bag higher, lower, more to the right, more to the left .... In the end, we ended up all laughing on the floor, in the pool of beans.

Not to mention, the beans are somehow static and stick to the plastic and hands, like lovers do.

My bro and I find it amusing and started shaking the bag violently. We watched how countless beans were dancing in the air. It's like a mini snow world we created ourselves!

11/6/05
Visited a famous Chinese doctor here.

Different from western medicine, the odor of Chinese herbs would just surge into ur nostrils once you open their door.

Can science really explain - how one from feeling ur pulse can tell so many things about ur body in a medical way?

But then again, I may be skeptical on my first visit.

11/7/05
Accompanied my relatives the whole day from one end of Nathan road to the other.

With all the crowds coming through on a Sunday, it’s just impossible to stroll with a relaxing mode. I don’t think 'strolling' ever exists in a local dictionary.

Everyone is rushing, fighting against time. Everything needs to be fast. Sometimes, I wonder if not for its shopping and food, tourists would hate it here.

11/8/05
Stayed at home during the day. Recuperate from all the accumulated feet soreness and insufficient sleep.

Was once again reminded of the sweetness of Home Sweet Home here - forgetting how the clocks tick the time away (for once, there is no need to rush in HK) and how cozy my room is.

Dad and bro went to Shenzhen and came back with loads of clothes. Didn’t bother to go because of the crowd and the pollution.

Seeing how cheap those clothes are, if to say I didn’t regret, that would be a lie.

11/10/05
Accompany my Mom meeting her old frens. A group of aunties chit chatting and laughing non-stop. Forgive them, it’s been a long time they hvn’t see each other.

Makes me wonder whether I would be fortunate to do the same when I’m her age.

11/11/05
Woke up pretty late with Mom. Went to wet market to do groceries.

Reminds me of the good old days when I was younger. Accompanying Mom buying meats and veggies and helping Mom to prepare meals.

It’s a simple task but it makes you smile and satisfied, now that you are doing the same thing with someone you love so dearly.

Helped Mom to pack. There are so many things that even zipping the luggages up is a problem.

Some are hers, some are bro’s – the left over that he can’t bring coz he too has too many things to bring back.

I think she had around 10+ kg in her hand carry, man!

11/12/05
Went to Disneyland and had a blast !

Though small but the shows are, indeed, magical. Entering this land definitely can not carries the posture of a professional adult but only to enter with a child's heart that you will truly enjoy.

Went to one of the well known Shanghainese restaurant in Causeway Bay for their Siao Long Bao and was totally disappointed. The meat ain't juicy enuff, the skin ain't thin enough. Don't people control their franchisees?

11/14/05
Shopped the most expensive sports shoe in my life - Nike Free.

Fell in love on my first trying. It moves with your soles in every steps. After wearing that for days, I realized my other sports shoes are redundant now.

Hmmm.... the best shoes I ever hv!
