This is the latest incarnation of what began as an Italian stage musical by Mario Fratti, then was adapted for Broadway by Arthur Kopit (book) and Maury Yeston (lyrics); the screenplay for the film was written by Michael Tolkin and the late Anthony Minghella, to whom the film is dedicated.

Nevertheless, the great looking cast makes it visually spectacular - a musical feast for the mind and the eye! (especially the Penelope's first scene *whistle*). It's only a regret that Nicole Kidman didn't appear as much.
It touches on so many recognisable strands of human experiences: self doubt, self image, honesty, loyalty, love, confusion ...
The production design is fabulous accompanied with the stunning Italian scenery and beautiful sets plus Rob Marshall's choreography - this movie is just simply rich and textured, a triumph of design and a whirlwind of images and fantasies. But yet, I would still prefer Marshall's last musical, the sensational Chicago at all times.
